Heritage conservation: theories, principles & practices
This module is intended to give students a practical understanding of the key principles, theories and methods of documentation of heritage conservation to enable students to understand the importance of preserving cultural and architectural heritage. Students will develop their awareness and understanding of the different approach of heritage conservation of buildings and landscapes. We will be exploring the differences between conservation, restoration and reconstruction within a historical and cultural context.

In a group, we are required to find, research, analyze and present three case studies of heritage conservation projects of a small to medium size building. The projects should comprise two international projects and two local projects. One of the projects should be a modernist historical building. Thus, we have chosen these four heritage building which is, Masjid Kampung Laut, The Mission House, The Lieb House and the Majestic Theatre.

Individually, I am required to present the overall conclusion and outcome analysis of the group case study. Then, the second task is to discuss and tabulate about their thoughts on; appreciation, awareness and importance of architectural heritage and conservation of one of the three buildings from their case study as a group, which I have chosen the Majestic Theatre to present.

assignment 2 (PDF)
We are assigned to prepare a Heritage and Conservation Proposal Report on the given building which is the Istana Bandar, Jugra, Selangor individually. Due to the pandemic situation, hypothetical condition and scenarios is given in the brief and we are required to propose a conservation approach of the exterior facade and a selected part of the building. All proposal is referred to ICOMOS Charter- Principles for the Analysis, Conservation and Structural Restoration of Architectural Heritage- 2003 document. The main goal of this project is to let student understand and identify the key principles and theories that have shaped the practices and problems in the area of heritage and conservation and is able to help the student discover various methods of conservation method that will be useful in the future practices.
