PROJECT1

MODELS AND TATTOOS

In project 1, we need to truly understand the design principle and elements. This will lead us to create our design intention. We are required to utilize the main design elements. For example, materials, lines, shape, mass, space and texture. Then, we need to continually refine the chosen design element with the design principles such as balance, connection, contrast and many more.

In this project, we are required to produce 6 models and 6 tattoo stamps (tattoo stamp is an abstract extraction of main ideas of my models) with design elements and principles.

assignment 1

1. Line and Rhythm

The first model I create is inspired by the human spine. I did research of the movement of the human spine, it designates that the arrangement of different size of the spinal cord and the direction of bending forward, backward, left and right. On the tattoo stamp, I use different line weight to indicate a feeling of the lines is moving on its own.

2. Shape and Connection

This idea was inspired by a paper lantern that I help my parents to decorate during Chinese New Year. I want to create a simple shape that connected to each other and form another complex shape and in the tattoo stamp, I highlight the intersection part and use a thicker line to express the shapes that are closer to our eyes.

3. Mass and Balance

To create equilibrium and the balance of mass, I use an idea of extracting out its skeletal of my basic structure. So, although this model have two contrasting structures when it was combining together, it will match and unify as one.

4. Materials and Grouping

Different materials are grouped together in the same layer and the tattoo stamps have the idea of "pre-formation" of my models. Tetris is the basic ideas of this model. The pattern my tattoo stamps is the different materials' symbol are almost aline and grouped together and my models are the final step of layering all the materials.

5. Texture and Contrast

A feeling of aggressiveness that is being constrained. It can never be contained. Exposing the roughness surface of grey board and model cards is my idea of transformation the keyword aggressiveness and to reveal a limitation of a feeling, I created a transparent jail as it expresses the lesson I had to learn - the only thing that limits us, is ourselves.

6. Space and Emphasis

I wanted to create a simple outlook on the exterior of my model and wanted to give people a wow factor when they open or explore inside. So, a simple cube shape is designed as a facade and it covers the complexity of a geometric shape inside.
